It's been a busy month or two at Wests Warriors headquarters. Well it would be if we had a headquarters. Nevertheless everyone at the club has been hard at work on and off the field. Trial matches, away days, promotions and training sessions has all lead to a stunning appearance in round 3 of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup.
No amateur London side has made it this far before so the Warriors have already set a benchmark but will not be resting there!
After drawing a home tie against the highly rated Haydock ARLFC, Premiers of the Northwest Men's League, the men from Acton have turned to their happy hunting ground of New River Stadium to host the match.
Wests have played two games at the venue to date and have come up trumps in both of them. The most notable was only last month when a very vocal crowd helped rally the team to overcome a Great Britain Police side 40-22. After the trip to Featherstone everyone is looking forward to playing at a ground more suited to our style.
The date of the match is the 25th of February with kick off scheduled for 230 p.m. Entry is via gold coin donation.
Outside of the playing arena the story of the Wests Warriors and their meteoric rise to Rugby League notoriety has gained traction in several leading Rugby League publications, sports websites and one of the UK's most revered newspapers, The Guardian.
"Formed just three years ago by Kiwi coach Kim Parkinson and his mate, former Japan RL international Shun Tamura, Wests became a hub for antipodean leaguies in Chiswick before moving to Wasps’ training ground in Acton. Parkinson tells me they also had a couple of Englishmen, French and Turkish players in the side last weekend."
The Guardian on Wests Warriors
The increase in coverage for London Premier League clubs can only be a good thing. The more exposure the clubs in London receive the more the sport can grow away from its traditional heartlands.
The Warriors would like to thank everyone for their support so far. We look forward to welcoming Haydock ARLFC to London and their travelling fans. We are sure that both teams will put on a first class spectacle of Rugby League befitting of BBC coverage!
