Westville made it 5 cup final wins from 5 and this surely was the best of the lot as they came from 2-0 down against AFP to secure the Rotherham Charity Cup 3-2.
Westville were 2nd best throughout the first half and went behind inside the first ten minutes following a well worked goal from AFP. They could have been further behind soon after was it not for the excellent Westville 'keeper Daniel Morton who was in inspired form. A serious injury to Club Captain Daniel Monfredi which saw him stretchered from the field late in the half seemed to rattle Westville who simply could not find a foot hole in the game and were fortunate to go in at half time just 1-0 down. Monfredi was replaced by Westville veteran Jamie Williams.
The early part of the second half went pretty much the same as the first and time & time again AFP found themselves with opportunities, but again & again Daniel Morton was the hero for Westville. AFP then doubled their lead with another well worked goal and the game looked to be over, with Westville seemingly unable to work their way into the game.
Then came an inspired double substitution from the gaffer Stuart Harper, bringing on the big target man Craig Jackson and the lightning quick Orrin McIntyre. Within minutes the game seemed to change and Westville suddenly found themselves with chances, however AFP were still creating plenty of chances of their own and Westville once again had to be thankful to 'keeper Daniel Morton.
82 minutes on the clock and Kieran Hirst found himself in space down the right, cut inside and curled a wonderful left footed shot around the AFP 'keeper, 2-1 game on. Many in the crowd would be forgiven for thinking that was merely a consolation goal, but the Westville die hard's knew better! 5 minutes later Westville centre back Aaron Tate found himself further forward than normal, collecting the ball out wide on the left, he cut inside and unleashed an unstoppable shot from well outside the box which left the net rippling and sent the Westville faithful into delirium! 2-2 and into extra time they go!
Westville really were in this game now and sensed the winner would come. That it did when 5 minutes into the first period of extra time Adam Stead rose highest to meet an in swinging free kick perfectly with his head, leaving the AFP 'keeper stranded. 3-2 and Westville finally had the lead in the game for the first time.
Westville saw out the remainder of the game comfortably against an AFP side who looked simply shell shocked at what had happened. Club stalwarts and originals Luke Sykes & Jamie Williams lifted the famous Rotherham Charity Cup for the first time in their history and rightfully so Man of the Match was awarded to Westville 'keeper Daniel Morton.
