First team win at Civil -- Muzza score twice.

First team win at Civil -- Muzza score twice.

alan cotton17 Mar - 12:05

Reserves keep up their momentum.

A week ago we entertained Civil Service and last Saturday we travelled to West London to play them again. We won both of the games – last week 2 – 1 in a nail biter and this week we were in cruise control and won 4 – 2.
At home we were one nil down after 2 minutes in a topsy turvy game that ended with a winning goal in the 97th minute. The goal itself was well worth waiting for – Josh Tutt released Sam Murray down the left wing and his perfect driven cross was smashed into the net by Charlie Kallas.
The relief round the ground was palpable – Charlie had equalized the scores in the 89th minutes – his run into the box was halted by a desperate tackle which warranted a penalty and the referee was on the spot – so was the ball but not for long -- as it was in the net before you could blink an eyelid (well, what else could you blink). The intense pressure continued and we always look like scoring kicking towards the Clubhouse – kicking towards the Bowls Club we are still persisting with 70 yard passes which unless you are Trent Alexander Arnold will have little chance of being productive (except on the odd occasion).
It was one way traffic in the last 20 minutes against a determined Civil side who were reduced to 10 men after 75 minutes as their central defender earned himself a cold shower for two bookable offences. They are “draw specialists” and looked like earning another until the pressure told as time ebbed away like Arsenal’s chances of winning the title.
They may have felt unlucky to get nowt but they ended up with only nine players as they had another player sent off in the 94th minutes for refusing to leave the field for a Sin Bin offence. He loitered with intent so the ref correctly gave him a Red Card.
Well done to the Boss for his half time lecture demanding more commitment and better concentration. There was little doubt about MOM recipient – Charlie K for two vital goals.
The return fixture bore no resemblance to the home game as we ran out comfortable winners after scoring via Josh Tutt in the first five minutes. It ended 4 – 2 but we were disappointed in the two goals that we conceded but disappointment is fleeting when you have another 3 points in the bag.
We were without skipper Jack Doyle who failed to recover sufficiently from his bruised ribs from last week’s game. The versatile Charlie Hackshall moved to right back and never put a foot wrong according to his Mum and Dad.
Josh Tutt put us ahead after 5 minutes and Civil scored our second on 17 minutes (many thanks). Civil got back in the game with a quick reply. The rampant Sam Murray restored our two goal advantage and later scored again to put the result beyond doubt.
Civil did get a second but 4 – 2 flattered them I think. This was a good team effort and we are maintaining our high level of form. The unbeaten run extends to 7 matches and we are playing with much more purpose. The goal scoring is now being shared by Tutty, Muzza and CK and I am hoping to see one of our midfield dynamos score before my 90th birthday – so you’ve got 8 seasons fellas.
“Muzza” was MOM but Kallas, Tutt, Kells and Clarkey were also in contention – I also gave it to Sam even though I wasn’t there. This was another team performance which sets us up for next week’s trip to Old Finchleians were we have many happy memories because Martin Barlow always buys me beer.
We still stand top of the table due to the shortage of chairs and have an AFA Cup Semi Final looming – I’m sure that we will maintain our focus and our form plus the skipper could return next week.
The Reserves were also on the road at Polytechnic and won all three points with Dave Lineker, Max Wooton and Henry Burt on target – an unlikely trio of scorers in the same game. This was a fine effort as they trailed 2 – 0 and looked like ending up with egg on their faces but finally “they brought home the bacon” winning 3 – 2 to maintain their challenge for honours.
The Fours drew 2 – 2 at Civil Service with Dave Calvert and Max Kinloch on target. I heard that Dave got another header but that’s likely to be a Fairy Tale. Keep up the good work fellas.
The Fives had a Double Header against Actonians and should have taken all 6 points instead of three from the second game which they won 1 – 0 with a goal from Owen Higgins. They gave away a 1 – 0 lead in the first game after dominating proceedings and lost 2 – 1 Manager Craig Corner was not happy so he never bought me a pint.
The Vets somehow lost 2 – 0 to Cudham and are still looking for reasons from a game that they dominated.
Next Saturday the Vets have the AFA Koolpack Over 40s Final at Winchmore Hill against West London Rams. Apparently the oppo have quite a few ex football league players on their books – I’ve heard of none of them whilst the Bluebloods have got players who represented England in their squad so I know all of them, their wives, children, grand parents, cats, dogs and budgies.
It’s a nice easy trip to The Paulin Ground and Winchmore are old SAL friends so it will be a great day out – bring the family but leave the cats and budgies at home as they will surely annoy each other all afternoon. And then there’s The Queens Arms on the way home – we could be nestling in the Queen’s Arms showing her the Cup around 5pm on Saturday so don’t miss this orgasmic event. Other Royals will attend including Lord Ian Freeman, Sir Eric Freeman, His Worshipful Master Terence Foster and Lord High Lieutenant Thomas Kilcoyne.
