Wetherby Athletic LFC 2 - Castleford White Rose 1
A great result and performance from the First Team yesterday, as they took 3 points on a boggy pitch at Castleford. The scoreline flattered the opposition, as Wetherby performed solidly for 89 and a half minutes (the consolation goal for White Rose coming just before the final whistle). The passing game that Wetherby played so well in the first half against Bradford last week worked well despite the pitch, and had most of the possession in the first half, with chances coming close. Everything was fantastic apart from getting the ball into the net.
It only took a few minutes in the second half for Wetherby to take an opportunity though, when Becky Furey slotted the ball home confidently and put Wetherby in the lead. More chances came, with Furey, Gemma Hall and Louise Ross coming close. Substitute Martyna Petrova made it two when a lovely ball slotted through the Castleford defence by Furey found Marty, and she beat the defence for pace, before cooly finishing. The only downside came just before the final whistle, when Castleford pushed up the field high, and managed to score.
The performance was exceptional from all who played, including the four subs who came on, and the attitude was fantastic. Everyone worked hard as a team, and continued to work on their game, not resorting to long-ball football despite the difficult conditions. It was a great game to watch from the sidelines, and was great to see the smiles afterwards.
Well done girls.. Up to 6th in the League, with Furey (4) and Petrova (6) adding to their League tallies for the season.
Player of the Match went to Megan Maxted, who ran the Castleford players ragged on the right wing, and created many opportunities. Not bad for a 16 year old! Well done young un! Close seconds went to Gemma Hall, Adele Murphy and Helen Hartley...
