After an extended Christmas break caused by the weather the wheatsheaf returned with a grudge match fixture against South Wilts Barbarians, always a touch well fought fixture presented with perfect weather set for a fast open running game from both sides.
The Wheatsheaf took an early 4 try lead through strong attack, James Reader trucking through from outside center cementing an impressive forward effort. Lapses in the South Wilts defence led to a cheeky try from 9 by Mike Bryan with another scored by pace man Darren French.
However it wasn’t long before the game saw an expected South Wilts resurgence, what looked like a potential walkover after early tries was not to be the case, rusty home defence opened up for south wilts to take two tries in a matter of minutes, the game was back on.
The second half saw the Wheatsheaf continue as they started with 4 more tries, the pick of the tries came from Ryan Barlow as he chipped though for himself with the help of a very kind bounce . A forwards try was scored by Dan Morton with a pick from meters out to cross the line in the corner and a fantastic try created by vast amounts of space in the backs from a phenomenal miss pass by fly half Scott Neary with Jake Myers running the distance without needing support to beat 3.
A solid return performance from a few weeks off and an eagerly awaited game next week against Salisbury Rugby club. A final score that doesn't reflect how tough South Wilts fought of 44-18 leaving the Wheatsheaf Cabin Crew in second place in the league.
