?Defeat for Cyclone but encouraging signs?
Winter League Division 1
White Cross Cyclone 18
HKR 25
The opening day of the Winter League saw Cyclone play newly formed club HKR for the first time at the Allam Sports Centre.
Quarter 1 started at pace and Cyclone soon found their feet taking an early lead, Ruby and Erin were on target scoring 3 and 2 goals respectively. Maddie, Brooke and Jess supplied some good ball and Lucy and Jolie kept HKR relatively quiet defending well, at the end of the quarter it was 5-4 in Cyclone’s favour.
Quarter 2 was the one that got away, HKR shot well and their movement was quick making it difficult for the Cyclone girls. Erin and Ruby picked up 2 goals apiece, a rejig in mid court saw Jess, Alice and Brooke work hard and again Jolie and Lucy tried to disrupt HKR attacks. At the end of the quarter it was 9-14 in HKR’s favour.
Quarter 3 saw Daisy make her club debut playing well at centre and Cyclone shrugged off the difficult quarter 2 with an improved performance. Erin and Ruby again scored 2 well taken goals each, Jess, Daisy and Maddie covered a lot of court working hard and Katie and Jolie did well at the back thwarting some HKR attacks. The quarter finished with HKR leading 20:13.
Quarter 4 finished honours even, 5 goals apiece, with Erin scoring 4 and Ruby 1, both girls moved well and gave their all playing the full match. Jess, Daisy and Brooke showed grit and determination in mid court and Jolie and Lucy continued to build up a good defensive partnership. Full time score was 25-18 to HKR.
So an opening day defeat, but the girls should be proud of their efforts, a relatively short pre season with a new coaching staff at the helm, which will only see them improve as the season goes on.
It’s good to be back and have our netball fix back!
