Match Report, Chard Vets v Wincanton 16.09.16
The season started with a bang for Wincanton RFC with a Friday night visit to Chard. The weather was glorious, the pitch superb but the team performance was even better. Losing Teddy Cox to a chipped fingernail pre match meant captain Rob Todd moved from fly half to tighthead prop bringing in Bill Evans at 10. This subtle variation gave steel to the forwards and allowed the back line to run at, through and round their opposite numbers. The pack won it's first scrum against the head and carried on being a solid platform to work off during the game. Lineouts functioned very well with pinpoint accurate throwing from Nathan Webster giving Scott Mills a chance to shine in his first game as the dedicated jumper. Quick and snappy service from Dave Flak at scrum half put the backs on the front foot during the first half and strong running was a feature from Paul Harwood, Dave Bullard and especially Bill Evans. The results of their running lines were a succession of passes to wing Matt Alford allowing him to cross the try line twice. Conversions were taken with aplomb by full back Dylan Hatton who slotted them over the bar on a regular basis.
When Chard had the ball they recycled well with their experience telling but found little ground with a defence that showed it had learnt from the coaching on Tuesday evening. The line was strong with good communication between players to recognise when the ball was lost and to fill potential gaps. The occasional break away runs were snuffed out by some excellent tackling from the returning Jay Fear.
Man of the Match for Wincanton was Nathan Webster who tackled like a demon, made some great carries and orchestrated the defensive line with intelligence. Harder games may lay ahead but this was a perfect start to the season and genuine promise was shown by all.
