Wittering Harriers move up to second in the league

The game saw bottom of the league Spalding Town host promotion hopefuls, Wittering, with what is turning out to be normal to play games in strong winds.
The game saw Wittering face the wind in the first half, the game started quite scrappy until Wittering began to put their foot on the ball at which point they found space in Spalding’s half. The first goal came from a Lee Croft corner that was headed clear, only for Grant Tippett to play the ball to James Savage who drilled his effort in off the post, the defender scoring his second in as many games, 0-1. This goal settled the game, Spalding showing some desire and having some joy in the Wittering half. This was until Wittering scored their second from another Croft corner, which was headed in by Lee Booker, 0-2. Spalding Town found some joy towards the end of the half, none more so than when a long throw-in swerved in the air, bouncing awkwardly and ultimately being handled by Sam Cayley. The penalty was awarded, Paul Greenhalgh dived to his left and at full stretch saved the penalty getting a good strong left hand on the ball. Spalding Town reacted well to missing the penalty and continued to press high and got their rewards when Mario Vaz scored with his freekick, which was helped on its way in via the head of Sam Cayley, 1-2. With only a few minutes left the score remained the same until half time.
Both sides knew the next goal was important, the game remaining the same until 20 minutes into the half. During that 20 minutes Wittering squandered numerous chances and the one way traffic continued, eventually Wittering making the most of their dominance and their breakthrough came when Mossy pounced onto a loose clearance, his overhead kick assisting Grant Tippett with an easy tap-in inside the six-yard box, Grant Tippett who is continuing to add to his record season tally (11 so far), 1-3. Spalding now had to press and push for a goal, but in doing so it left big gaps for Wittering to exploit. It wasn’t long until Wittering scored their 4th when Croft squared the ball for his strike partner, Andrew Moss who tidily tucked it away for his 28th of the campaign, 1-4. The victory was rounded off by a customary goal from Croft, assisted by Grant Tippett, rolling to the ball to Croft who struck his effort from 20 yards out, converting a reverse strike that left the Spalding keeper rooted to the spot, 1-5.

Managers Comments “In the last few seasons Spalding Town has always been a tough place to go and yesterday was no different. The weather and the pitch made it hard to get the ball down and play. First half we played against the win and struggled to get out at times and lacked any sort of composure. The first two goals from Savage and Booker both came from corners which was something we had spoken about before the game and those goals settled us down. At half time I asked the boys for a reaction and they responded in spells and played some great stuff to see the game out. Obviously, that moves us up to second, but other teams have games in hand on us. We just focus on a game at a time and see where we end up after these last 10 league games. We’re looking forward to our next match, a home game against Whittlesey Athletic Reserves”
