In the beginning

Woolston Rovers Rugby Club was first started at the Lido Country Club on Manchester Road, Woolston in 1959. In those early days the owner of the Lido Fred Bond, together with Frank Green and Joe Cook, ran the entire operation. The club started with fifteen players, each paying two shillings and sixpence per week and selling football cards in order to buy the first playing shirts. Each player had to provide their own shorts and socks.

For the first two seasons Woolston had no pitch, and at first played all their games away from home. At the start of the third year they acquired a pitch on Victoria Park where they played until they moved to Bennetts Recreation Ground, Padgate.

The very first game played by Woolston Rovers was against Cadishead in season 1960-61. Woolston's Peter Brown scored an interception try in the first minute for Woolston with Joe Chamberlain adding the goal, but it was a short lived lead with Woolston losing 58-8. But the important thing was that Woolston Rovers were up and running.
