Brilliant comeback victory for young Rovers

Woolston Rovers Under 18s produced a stunning fightback to turn around a big deficit and claim a thrilling victory over Wigan St Patricks in the NWC Under 18s Premier Division at The Sadore Construction Field, Monks Sports Club last Sunday lunchtime.

Rovers opened the scoring with a try from prop forward Ben Moore, converted by stand off Dec Leonard but then St Pats replied with a try and conversion to level matters and Rovers had full back Jake Bray dismissed for dissent.

The visitors then took control and moved clear with three tries, two of them converted to move into a 22-6 half time lead.

The second half saw Rovers step up their game and tries from loose forward Sean Millington, second row Todd Preston that was converted by Leonard and centre Ross McGlone brought the home side to within two points.

A second try for Preston put the Green & Gold into the lead and then the win was secured late on when winger Kieran Jones crossed to make the final score 28-22 to a jubilant Rovers side.

The Man of the Match was awarded to Rovers prop forward Owen Hazlehurst. He was very well supported by second row Todd Preston and substitute Jacob Proudlove.

After the game Rovers Under 18s coach John Morris said, “That was certainly a game of two halves. We were well below the standard we have come to expect in the first half and St Pats thoroughly deserved their advantage but we spoke at half time about what we needed to do and the lads went out in the second half and produced some stunning play to claim the win. To back up today after playing on Thursday, and with 12 men for an hour, was an exceptional effort and I was very proud of them all. The only downside was a bad arm break for in-form winger Will Ridge and we wish him a very speedy recovery. ”
