Worthing joint-manager Jon Meeney has revealed that he will give opportunities to a number of young Rebels tonight against Burgess Hill Town.
The Rebels will be looking to bounce back from their defeat to Faversham Town on Saturday as they take on their Sussex rivals in the first round of the Robert Dyas League Cup.
Meeney admitted that Jack Barnes and goalkeeper Jack Fagan will both be in the starting line-up, while Under-18s Jack Punter and Mike Waller will also be in the squad.
“Both teams will look to utilise their squad, but at the same time there’s a pool of players that both squads have got and I think it’ll be a competitive game,” said Meeney on Saturday.
“We certainly want to win it. The best thing we can do (after Saturday) is get back out there, look to apply certain things from the performance, and we’ll be fielding a strong side.
“The reason I say that is because there isn’t a weak player within our side. We have positive, quality players throughout the dressing room.
“Whatever side we put out will go out there and play football, and we just need to be clinical and show composure in the final third.”
Meeney also said that he won’t be rushing Omar Bugiel (back) and Gary Elphick (hamstring strain) back into the team.
He said: “We’re still monitoring Omar but we’re not going to risk him tonight. He’ll do some light work but we want to manage him with care because it’s still early in the season.
“Regarding Gary, we’ll give him a little bit of extra time to recover. He might come back in for Saturday but there’s no point rushing little niggles otherwise we’ll end up with severe injuries.
“To be honest, although we conceded on Saturday, we’re generally happy with the way Matt Hurley and Corey Heath have come in so they’ll be in the squad.”
Ryan Quirke will again be absent through the illness he has been suffering from since the season opener against Corinthian-Casuals.
Meeney said that Quirke will hopefully return to training this week but wouldn’t be rushed back into the side as he has lost weight and needs to fully recover first.
Tony Nwachukwu (long-term stomach problem) is still unavailable, while left-back Harvey Sparks (holiday) will return to the squad having missed the first three games.
Meeney also revealed that there will be a new signing within the squad tonight, adding that it is “someone who knows the players and fits into our identity”.
Worthing were beaten 3-2 by Burgess Hill in pre-season with Dan Pearse scoring a second half brace to give the visiting side victory in a three-team friendly tournament.
Callum Saunders also scored in that game and could feature again tonight alongside fellow ex-Rebels Darren Budd, Scott Kirkwood and Joe Keehan.
The Hillians made a strong start to their Ryman Premier League campaign, winning their opening two fixtures against Needham Market and VCD Athletic.
But on Saturday the Hillians were unable to make it three wins in three as they lost 2-1 at home to fellow strong starters Grays Athletic.
Kick-off for tonight’s game is at 7:45pm with admission costing £8.00 for adults, £6.00 for concessions and £3.00 for 12-16 year olds with under-12s free.
