Yarnbury U17s Colts are brave in defeat in the Yorkshire Cup final

On a bright clear day in Hull, Yarnbury took to the field against Hull Ionians in the Yorkshire Cup final. Yarnbury were big underdogs against Ionians who had won the premier division and were undefeated all season and they were also playing at home.

Yarnbury started brightly and from the kick off won a turnover from Jamie Rice. Most of the first 20 minutes was played in the Ionians half, with big carries from Joe Ward getting them over the gain line, but the Ionians defence was to prove strong and when Ionians did concede penalties the kicks at goal went astray. Some good kicking from Alex Lee and kick chase from Mason Baker, Oli Bastain and Dan Longhawn kept Ionians pinned back initially and Ionians own good kicking game kept Yarnbury away from the try line.

Ionians entered the Yarnbury 22 for the 1st time after 20 minutes and when Yarnbury were penalised for not rolling away they opted for goal. The kick missed but Yarnbury decided to run the ball out and were driven back over their line for a 5m scrum to Ionians. From the scrum Ionians scored in the right corner with good hands putting the winger away, the conversion was made for 7-0. The rest of the half was a fiercely contested with Jude Sander showing up well at the breakdown. Ionians were awarded another penalty just before half time but the kick went wide and the half ended 7-0.

Harvey Coates and Albert Humphreys both came on at prop second half and the scrum became more of an even contest and both put in some big tackles. The first 15 minutes of the half was tense with few line breaks or scoring opportunities. Ionians eventually added to their score with a penalty to make it 10-0. Yarnbury were struggling to keep the ball past 4th phase under pressure form Ionians.

Ionians eventually extended their lead with a nice break from their 10 and an out the back door pass put a support player under the posts. Conversion made for 17-0. Yarnbury kept going and their defence held up pretty well all day, Ionians built pressure from a good kicking game and breaks round the edges. The final score game with just minutes to go when Yarnbury went off the top at a lineout on their own 5m line and the loose ball was picked up by Ionians and transferred through hands to the right wing who scored in the corner, conversion missed and final score 22-0.

Yarnbury man of the match went to Joe Ward for some strong carries and good work on defence.
