Yarnbury U17s edge the floodlight game against Aireborough U18s

Yarnbury started well against their first opposition from the U18s division. The scrum was going well and they pushed Aireborough off their own ball twice early on to the point where the Aireborough lads were reminding the referee they could only be pushed back 1.5 metres. Apart from the 1st Yarnbury lineout when they were rightly penalised for not straight the lineout to maul went well and Aireborough were penalised for collapsing several times. This gave Yarnbury a strong platform and they retained possession well.

They moved into Aireborough territory repeatedly with big carries from Elliot Whitaker, Lewis Russell and Jude Sander, but loose carries and carless ball handling cost them and Aireborough were able to clear their lines with the kick. Another great lineout throw from James Spencer to Dan Longhawn set the maul rolling to the Aireborough line and when it was brought down less than 10 metres from the line and a series of picks got them close but then for some reason they tried to go to the backs when only a metre from the line and the Aireborough 10 read it and intercepted and raced the length of the field to score and it was converted for 0-7. Not to be put off Yarnbury set up another driving maul from a similar position only minutes later and this time it was not stopped and James Spencer grounded the ball at the back, conversion missed for 5-7. There were 2 styles of play developing, Yarnbury retaining possession and going through large numbers of phases against Aireborough's clever kicking options. A penalty for off feet allowed Aireborough to kick for the corner and another penalty went against Yarnbury for side entry at the subsequent maul and several phases late a nice miss pass put them through a gap from close range to score for 5-12 with the conversion missed. It looked like Yarnbury had levelled when Dan Longhawn picked up a loose ball 20 metres out and stepped his way back towards the posts but a last minute tackle from the Aireborough 15 held him up a metre from the line and despite several attempts from Sam Yewdall and others they could not ground the ball over line and a goal line drop put was awarded and the half ended 5-12.

The second half continued in the same theme, Yarnbury unloaded all 7 subs at half time but still dominated territory and possession, while Aireborough looked to counter with the kicking game. Yarnbury closed the gap to two points with another strong catch and drive and when it looked to have stopped Harry Stratford peeled off with support latchers Harvey Coates and others who drove him over to score, conversion missed for 10-12. It was not long before another lineout led to more picks from the forwards and it was that man again Harry Stratford to drive over and score for a Yarnbury lead for the 1st time in the game at 15-12 with another conversion missed. Harvey Coates then thought he had increased the lead with his first try of the season but the referee could not see a clear grounding. There was still 15 minutes to go and most of it was spent in the Aireborough half, Sam Chin added tempo and Alex Lee darted and probed but the Aireborough defence held strong.

In truth this was a good win for Yarnbury U17s but it could and probably should have been more comfortable with the amount of territory and possession they had. With quite a few players not stopping after the game no MOM was awarded, but pack leader Max Fletcher had an outstanding all round game at the breakdown, he supported the ball carrier on numerous occasions and carried himself when others tired.
