Juniors Lift the cup
25/04/02

It was a pitty that either side had to loose this closely fought Wharfedale Junior Cup Final at Otley.

Baildon probably shaded the first half, which was marred by a serious injury to Ilkley goalkeeper Shane Etherington just as half time approached. The keeper fell awkwardly in an accidental collision with Trinity forward Chris Reardon which allowed Gavin Donoghue to knock the ball in the net from ten yards. Etherington was taken to hospital with a broken leg.

Ilkley looked more of a threat in the second half but Baildon stood firm and as the clock ticked down Trinity looked most likely to score but chances went begging. Danny Morton pulled of a fine save in the Baildon goal but was lef helpless on 84 mins when Ilkley equalised. Donoghue, Andy Padgett and Scott Marsden worked hard in midfield for Trinity and James Brown and Craig Renton were solid at the back.

In extra time Baildon again looked the more likely to score and Reardon was unlucky not to be awarded a goal when his shot seemed over the line before being hooked clear. In the second period Morton made a fabulous double save to deny Ilkley and take the match to penalties. Morton again proved the hero with a fine save to ensure Baildon lifted the Cup winning 3-2 on pens.
