Ian was awarded his BBOH following his nomination and award for exceptional long service to sport award at the recent MK sports achiever of the year awards in December 2019. Here is reason for Ian’s award:
Ian Nobes has been a member of Bletchley RUFC on both the playing and organisational teams for over 42 years joining the club as a 16 year old from Leon School, as it was it was known in 1977.
Ian quickly progressed through the ranks becoming a regular first team back row forward for many years during which time they won several league and cup competitions. Ian was selected to play for the county and picked for trials with Northampton Saints and England Schools in his youth>
Ian unfortunately had to retire in 2001 on medical grounds, else he would still be playing today!! But involvement in Bletchley RUFC continued where he encouraged both his sons, Joe and Matt and his daughter, Beth to continue his passion for the game and club by taking up rugby football – Matt later becoming 1st team captain and Beth becoming an integral part on the newly formed Bletchley Ladies XV in 2010.
Ian continued to share his knowledge and experience as a coach at the club once he stopped playing, taking on a key coaching role with the Bletchley Ladies team in 2011 – taking them from a fledgling team to league champions in 3 successive seasons from 2015 to 2018 and culminating in 8 squad members representing the winning county team in 2018/19 and 1 member going on the represent Ireland at International level currently.
Ian has been a continuous champion of the club playing a key part in the new club extension in 2010 and organising fund raising events such as he annual “Party on the pitch” from 2008 to 2010.
His involvement in the club operations is constant – he marks out the pitches, washes the shirts, provides coaching support to younger coaches coming through the club and can even be found fixing the plumbing, cooking chips or tiling the bathrooms in the club house.
Despite over 40 years of unpaid volunteering Ian continues his passion for the game and the club and this season has become the clubs safeguarding officer – looking after the welfare of all our young players – and has also taken up the role as the club’s Coaching Coordinator, passing on his experience to coaches at all levels throughout Bletchley RUFC
Throughout this time he has also managed to maintain his day job as a police officer within the Thames Valley Force, which he has done for over 25yrs,
