Match Report: Norton & Stockton Ancients 1-3 Boldon CA FC

Gavin Henderson31 Oct 2020 - 18:41

Another win for Boldon gives David Crumbie’s side a 12 point lead at the top of the Wearside League.

Boldon CA extended their lead over Horden CW at the top of the division to twelve points after winning 3-1 today away at Norton & Stockton Ancients.

Two goals from top scorer Levi Collins and a superb curling effort from Dan Wright settled what was a very close game, one which Norton will probably feel they should have taken something from after spurning some good chances and dominating for a spell in the second half.

Boldon’s quality ultimately set them apart, and taking the lead in the early stages meant that Norton, despite their best efforts, were always chasing the game.

Norton should probably have taken the lead after just three minutes, when a ball threaded through the defence found their striker one-on-one with Jimmy Lone, but the finish was poor and straight at the keeper’s legs to ensure Boldon’s blushes were spared.

Minutes later it was Boldon’s turn to miss a sitter - a well-placed header from Alex McBeth fell to Levi Collins, who hit the bar when it seemed easier to stick the ball in the back of the net.

Collins made amends though, and in the seventeenth minute he raced through on goal and finished excellently to put his side ahead.

The in-form striker then doubled his tally for the day midway through the half when he was brought down inside the box. Having been awarded a penalty, he despatched the ball calmly into the bottom corner to give Boldon a two-goal lead.

Collins had another three chances to score in the half that all went begging, and some fantastic link up play between Jonny Wightman and Dan Wright ultimately led to nothing, despite their best efforts.

The Villa went in at half time in full control, but credit must go to Norton for the way they played in the second period - with the wind on their side, they dominated the ball for the most part, but just didn’t create enough clear chances to make Boldon pay.

They did, however, get one back in the 64th minute - a fair reward for how they had played after the break.

Boldon were able to resist whatever was thrown at them, defending brilliantly, and eventually killed the game off with a third goal with twelve minutes left to play.

Midfield maestro Dan Wright curled a superb shot into the top corner from around 20 yards to get himself on the scoresheet - his 14th of the season.

The Villa were able to see the game out from that point, running out deserved winners from a tight affair that could have gone differently had Norton taken the early lead when they had the chance.

Next up for Boldon is a home fixture with bottom side West Auckland Tuns (19:30 KO, Wednesday).
