Academic Programme

Sports Academy students study a full-time course of their choice alongside their football or rugby coaching.

Training Programme

The Sports Academy training programme is very thorough. There is a two-hour coaching session every day that includes all technical aspects of the game and fitness. In addition, students will be given individual fitness programmes that focus on speed and agility and strength work. All students are also given advice on diet and nutrition, together with comprehensive sports injury back up. Although it is not compulsory, we do suggest that students take out their own private medical insurance policy.

Coaching Qualifications

Every student in the Sports Academy has the opportunity to gain various coaching qualifications. This includes the Level 1 Coaching Qualification in football which is a recognised qualification within the Sports and Leisure Industry.

Progression

From the Sports Academy, students may progress to a career in a number of different directions. They have the opportunity to continue to Higher Education or employment as well as guidance on playing opportunities and sports scholarships.

The male football squad is run in partnership with Bury Town FC and all students make up the Bury Town Under 18 squad. Numerous former students have gone on to play for Bury Town First Team. Bury Town FC plays in the Ryman Premier Division (Step 3).

Students also get the opportunity to play for Team Bury who play in the Thurlow Nunn League (Step 6), as well as the FA Vase and FA Cup. Team Bury is mostly made up of current Sports Academy students.

In addition to working with our two Bury Town partner clubs, Bury Town and Team Bury, West Suffolk College also enter a team in the English Colleges FA Premier League.

West Suffolk College have won the English Colleges FA national play-offs three times in the last ten years and have also won the English Colleges FA Knock-out Cup three times.
