The Hammerheads Formation
Hammerheads were founded in August 2009 after the original 8 members got together by the huge Mexican Flag in the heart of Cancun's world famous Hotel Zone and decided to throw a Rugby ball around.... something that is still a very rare site in Mexico, let alone Cancun.
Our Founders are from Several Rugby Playing Nations -
"Chelo" Marcelo Canaima - Argentina
"Chino" Gustavo Mendez - Argentina
"Goncho" - Argentina
Flourent - France
Steve Chamberlain - England
Matt Peat - England
Neil Emberson - England
Allen Mason - Isle of Man
Almost everywhere were signs "NO BALL GAMES" and so our first Cancun Rugby sessions were confined to a small triangular traffic Island infront of "Casa Maya Hotel" which resembled more the trenches of World War One than a Rugby Pitch.... but from Humble beginnings came our team.
In a search for somewhere to get established and get the team up and running we held training sessions on any spare piece if ground that we could, and even with a ring of cars with the headlights on so that we could see.
The team name and logo were voted on and ranged from Barracudas, Sharks and eventually settled on "Hammerheads". Special Thanks to Jorge Tapia, Scorpio Divers Cancun, for the design and implementation of the Logo into the team.
Fixtures and League
"Hammerheads" first competitive games were held in November 2009 in Playa del Carmen during the Cancun 7's Tournament, where we faced Black Thunder (Mex), Blackheath (UK) and Ex Aztecas (Mex), resulting in 2 losses and a win. Our First Unofficial points (it was a try) were against Blackheath and scored by Neil Emberson although he was deemed to have stepped outside of the touchline, the first Official points were scored against Ex Aztecas by Ben Mooney.
Another little piece of History was recorded when Hammerheads staged the "First Ever" game of Rugby to be held in Cancun, in December 2009, and we would like to pass on our special thanks to "Hilton Hotel Cancun" for allowing us to host the event on the Football pitch infront of their resort. "Eek'Baalam" from Playa del Carmen were our opposition and after a very close first half Cancun succumbed to the experience and fitness of the older team. Ben Mooney again the hero with a good try and Marcelo Caimari scoring the Conversion. Final Score Cancun 10 - 24 Playa del Carmen.
Pitch and Training
"Hammerheads" have finally got a place to call "home" although it's a rented pitch and we don't have a club house. We have been like the homeless wandering the city looking for a place to get established, and in the hope that a permanent place may attract more attention to our beloved sport.
We finally have a place at COJUDEQ, Cancun on the way towards Cancun Airport, Training nights are Tuesday and Thursday at 8pm with additional training available if needed in the form of organised runs through the Hotel Zone or time in the Gymnasium.
