Cumbernauld Rugby Football Club (CRFC) was founded in May 1970 when a group of fellow enthusiasts met to discuss forming a club. Original members were: John Colletta, Jim Calder, Ian, Calder, Dave Biggin and Paul McCready (deceased).
Training started in the summer of 1970 and the first game against a Cambuslang fifteen was played on September 12th 1970, Cumbernauld running out eventual winners by 13 points to 3, and so the club was born. The momentum continued and the club went from strength to strength and was fielding 3 XV's by the beginning of the next season. Youth and Mini sections soon followed.
In those days all the home games were played at the Ravenswood Sport Fields but the members had greater ambitions and were actively seeking a permanent home for the Club. Various fund raising activities were put into action and it was not long before the club had sufficient funds to start negotiations with the various local authorities. After looking at various sites in the town Cumbernauld Development Corporation agreed that the club could develop the current area at Auchenkilns in South Condorrat. Planning permissions were granted and the Clubhouse and facility was finally opened on Christmas Eve 1979.
The complex is now a multi sports facility and is also the home of Kildrum United Football Club and the Club would welcome applications from any other minority sports in the town who are seeking a permanent home.
The Rugby Club 1st fifteen play in the Scottish Rugby Union's National League Division 3 and are looking to field 3 fifteen's next season and welcome any players old or new to come along and join.
The club also runs a very active youth section, which is split into various age groups ranging from under 18 to over P1. Again the youth section would like to hear from any one interested in taking up the Game.
Introductionary sessions are held for people who are new to the game, so don't be put off. In addition if you only want to spectate and enjoy the facilities then you can join as an associate member.
So, come along and join Cumbernauld Rugby Football Club
