Llandybie took to the field flying high in Division 6, confident that they could spring a surprise at the North road maroon headquarters. From the opening whistle Lampeter played into the hurricane force wind and rain, with spectators making for the newly opened clubhouse at blistering pace to avoid a soaking. Conditions dictated a sloppy opening for the home side as Llandybie pressed hard in defence from the opening to closing whistle. Indeed it was the visitors who drew first blood with a fine 40 metre penalty struck from the boot of fly half Ben Fetherstone with the wind at his back with just three minutes gone. From the restart the home side pressed hard but conditions ensured mistakes aplenty, playing into the hands of the heavier visiting scrum. Surging runs from number eight Brynmor Jones played havoc with the visiting defensive line, especially as captain Aled Thomas took ball at pace during second phase sucking in even more defenders. Whilst Fetherstone may have received plaudits for his earlier kick, it was Lampeter fly half who stole the limelight by spotting a gap and cleverly scoring a great individual try wide out, making the conversion close to impossible in such conditions. Three minutes later and rampaging number eight Jones fed a clever inside pass to industrious centre Dyfan Evans to score a well worked try for the popular inside centre. Evans has endured a torrid time with of late with media attention focusing on his farm with claims of animal neglect and cruelty, with his performances suffering as a result yet hopefully the young man has put past problems behind him as he helps Lampeter in their quest for glory. Just before the half time whistle fly half Thomas again crossed the whitewash as the Llandybie backline stepped up too fast leaving yet again a hole for Thomas to step and slide his way through.
No successful conversions for Lampeter saw the half time score at 15-3 but with Lampeter having the wind advantage.
Llandybie started the second half the stronger of the two sides putting the home pack under pressure at times with stalwart number eight Tracy Lewis making yards every time he had the ball along with ex Lampeter Saints favourite inside centre Huw Williams strong with ball in hand, yet inevitably with Thomas using the wind to good effect the visitors found the going tough especially when young talent,Man of The Match Brynmor Jones took the ball at pace, crashing over and awarded a rather debatable score under the posts, converted by Thomas. As conditions deteriorated more and more scrums became part of the game, yet with Lampeter able to replace their entire front row the task become even tougher for the visitors, that was until returning prop Ron Morgan carried the blame as a case of mistaken identity saw him leave the field for an offence carried out by Captain Aled Thomas. Not the first time Captain Thomas has transgressed against one of his team-mates.
Even down a man Lampeter were able to work their way upfield for scrum half Joe Thomas to pounce as the forwards opened the way for him to score. Saving the best to last, a number of positional changes allowed Carwyn Lewis to slot into fly half, a position some believe to be his best on the field. As a maverick outside half defences really get mesmerised by his clever footwork and instinctive play. Following players rather than the ball allowed a gap for underused wing Kyle Ward to thunder up the pitch from forty metres out to score a popular try under the posts, converted by second row Gerallt Thomas in a vain attempt to get onto the scoresheet. As the game came to a conclusion, frustrations threatened to boil over as a late hit incensed hooker Aled Jacobs but was defused by Lampeter's Daryl Davies reminding him of the importance of next Saturday's local derby against Aberaeron. Wise words indeed from the young vice captain who had himself had a better eighty minutes this week than he had last week. Coach Paul Jones expressed his contentment at the season so far and how the players have worked hard to implement structure and patterns employed on the training field with a home victory against Aberaeron next Saturday being the icing on the cake.
