Whitburn convincingly beat league leaders Livingston
Whitburn avenged their defeat earlier in the season at rain soaked Livingston with a competent 3-1 win in which they were seldom troubled even when they went down to 10 men with 15 minutes to play. That said in the third minute a pacy looking right winger Ewan Sutherland hit the side netting from a wide position and a good free kick on the quarter hour by Etan Anderson which Dougie Horne got down well to parry away suggested that this could a challenging game. After this though, Whitburn started to dominate and took the lead in the 19th minute when Darren Liddell beat his man wide right and put in a great cross which Andy Mochan headed in at the back post. On the half hour Scott Watson hit what looked to be a high up and under but the wind caught it and keeper Stuart Gillsepie was forced to push over the bar. 8 minutes later a fantastic flowing move ended in a diagonal from the right which Iain Griffin met beautifully to slot past the advancing Gillespie. Just 2 minutes later it was 3 when Reece Duncan fired a penalty into the bottom left hand corner after Watson had been upended in the box. In added time Andy McQuillan, returning to Central Park put in a great free kick which Jamie McNeish headed just past the post. The second half was much less eventful as Whitburn seemed content to hold Livingston at bay whilst not creating much themselves. Midway through the half Anderson gave Livi a little hope as he headed in a Sutherland short corner – a corner that was needlessly given away it has to be said. The visitors tried to add to their tally but the home defence gave them hardly any other real chances. The only blot on the copybook was the sending off of Liddell with quarter of an hour to go but luckily it had no impact on the score that lifts Whitburn to third place.
