Victory at the fortress with a final score of 55-0 to the hosts!
New Cross finished the season with a resounding victory to retain the Devon Junior Vase. In a bruising encounter, the visitors never looked like scoring but defended aggressively with a number of Fijians in their ranks. In front of a good crowd the hosts opened the scoring with Ali Welby racing in from halfway and then Nick Halse squirreled over on the back of home scrum domination. Ryan Wotton converted both. Strong tackling kept the visitors in the game until just before halftime when first Luke Williams then Ricky Walters crossed to effectively end the game as a contest. It was one way traffic after the break with props Dayne Layton and Aaron Taylor making big inroads. Nick Halse got his second and man of the match Jarryd Harris crossed when swatting away would be tacklers with ease. Torrin Stone got in on the act through good support play and Wotton, skippering the side for the last time, raced in under the sticks after more good work from Harris. Wotton slotted 3 of 4 conversions. Big lock Dan Hayward completed the scoring with a try in the corner to cap a fantastic afternoon. New Cross have only lost 1 game since the end of October, to eventual Devon 1 league winners Tamar Saracens, and narrowly missed out on a play-off spot so this trophy was a deserved reward for everyone connected to the club. Finally a big thank you to all of our supporters who have helped us this season.
