We field two competitive sides (Division 2 and Division 3) competing in the Empire Rugby Football Union Geographical Union ("Empire GU") and the Northeast (NRU). Recent highlights include trips to the national round of 16 in 2001 and 2002, and regional playoffs in Competitive Region 4 (CR4) round of 32 in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
In the spring of 2015 both our teams made a push at the national playoffs and were mere defeats away from the a national title.
Please email Josh, our recruiting coordinator, for more information about coming out to trainings. Please note that while NYRC can't offer visa assistance or paid playing opportunities...once you're here in New York City we'd be glad to have you join us!
Among other things we have put in place several programs to enhance the development of our players:
A dynamic coaching team including South African Greg Norris, Irishman William Hutch, and Ohioan Tom Ginley.
Player exchanges with overseas rugby clubs (West Brisbane Bulldogs, Australia, and the Villagers RFC, Cape Town, South Africa).
Access to professional trainers for targeted speed, agility and strength training, and physical therapy.
We welcome people with no experience through to those who have been playing all their lives. We believe rugby will only continue to grow in the US if we can provide the chance for inexperienced players to train and play alongside experienced ones. So if you've never played, got the urge to take it up again after a long break, or want to challenge yourself at a higher level then you're welcome to come down and join us.
We train for our XVs in a Fall Season (August - November) and a Spring Season (March - June)as follows:
Regular Season:
Tuesdays and Thursdays (starting Sept. 2nd) : 8:00-10:00p.m. @ Pier 40
In June and July we play 7s and enter 4-5 tournaments over the course of the summer. In addition, we have indoor off-season training in the winter - so no matter what time of year it is, chances are we're playing rugby and would love to have you join us!
Keep and eye on the training schedules on the men's frontpage or the men's calendar and come along, or get in touch with our recruiting coordinator.
Rugby really is a game for all shapes and sizes but there are some requirements; you must have cleats and a mouthguard to play, and the willingness to learn a new and complicated but very rewarding sport. As long as you have those you can get away with whatever you want to wear until you get all the proper kit.
Our membership is also sprinkled with players from far and wide and we can help US citizen or players holding "Green Cards" find jobs and relocate through our extensive alumni membership. However NYRC is a amateur club and as such does not pay players for their playing time or travel expenses to the US.
To become a full member you will need to pay dues, which entitle you to membership of the New York Rugby Club Inc. not just the men's team. You will also need to CIPP register, that is registered to play, with USA Rugby. There is a $45 fee for this that can be paid directly to USA Rugby. Both are required to play.
