8. Brent Pope


New Zealand born rugby player, coach and TV commentator. Brent Pope was selected in the original 1987 New Zealand Rugby World Cup training squad, but had to withdraw from it before the tournament got underway due to an injury in the final All Black trials. Pope played nearly 100 first class games for Otago ( one of New Zealands top first division provinces) winning a national first division championship title in 1991 and has also represented Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand Universities, Barbarians, New Zealand XV and was a former Captain of the Penquins. played rugby with top New Zealand side Otago University before finally settling in Ireland in 1991 and lining out for three seasons with St Marys RFC winning the AIL with St Marys in 2000. Later Brent coached Clontarf RFC for two seasons, leading them to promotion to Division One of the AIL.

Brent has worked as a TV rugby pundit for nine years and can regularly be seen on RTE with George Hook & Tom McGurk. President Tony Murphy describes Brent as one of the most enjoyable people to just sit down and have a pint with. Brent has been extremely generous with his time and commitment to our club and we will always be forever grateful.
