Biography

Wilkinson signed a pro deal with his local team Hull City in 2010, having been part of a Tigers youth side that won the Youth Alliance North East Conference in 2009-10.

He spent time on loan at Harrogate Town and North Ferriby United, as well as playing for Loughborough University in the Midland Alliance, while also studying for a degree in Accounting and Financial Management.

He later played for Scarborough Athletic and Goole, before joining Shaw Lane from Rushall Olympic ahead of the 16/17 season.

Dan tragically passed away after an Integro League Cup clash against Brighouse Town when he collapsed on the pitch. Dan appeared to stop breathing and go into cardiac arrest during the second-half of the fixture at St Giles Road stadium. CPR was administered before he was rushed by ambulance to the Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax where he passed away.

The club released a statement the following morning saying: "It's with great sadness that we have to announce the tragic loss of Daniel Wilkinson who has sadly passed away after collapsing on the pitch during the game last night, our thoughts and prayers are with him family and friends at this time," said chairman Craig Wood on Facebook.

"The club would like to thank everyone for their heartfelt messages and thoughts that we have received throughout the night. There are no more words at this time."

Dan’s parents made it clear that the following week’s game had to go ahead as a show of respect to their loving son – who would’ve wanted the game to be played. Emotional tributes where made before and after the game of which the Ducks won 2-0. A stand was named in loving memory as well as the retirement of the number 5 shirt for the rest of the campaign.

From there “The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation” was set up in aid of raising money and awareness for the rare condition that can only be found in 1/5000 adults. Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (AVRC), the same disease that caused former footballer Fabrice Muamba to retire in 2012.

ARVC is an inherited condition that causes the replacement of cardiac muscle with fibrous, fatty tissue, normally in the right side of the heart. This causes the walls in the heart chamber to become thin and stretched, impacting how the blood is pumped around the body and causing abnormal heart rhythms (or dangerous cardiac arrhythmias).

The club will never forget Daniel Wilkinson, as he watches over us every day. Whenever the players and coaches step out on the field they will always ensure that they “Do it for Dan”
