St Helens Town travelled to Garstang looking to somewhat make amends from the weekends loss to Atherton LR, a fantastic warm and sunny evening greeted Town who started full of confidence , controlling the ball well and creating some fantastic chances and I doubt many could of argued if we had capitalised and went into half time in the lead. But the entertaining first half drew to a close and both teams went in at nil nil.
As the sun began to set Garstang started as the much better team in the second half, a Town attack came to nothing and some quick passing lead to a fine cross in from the left and all the the Garstang player had left to do was to tap it in. Town to their credit kept their heads up and never gave up and a few more chances came our way but again some good saves from the Garstang keeper and some last ditch defending .Garstangs second goal however caused by much controversy as the clearest handball you could ever see was somehow missed by the referee ,But our lads dug deep and at 2-0 down with only 19 minutes left you could of seen just one way that this would end.
But Town managed to grab their first with great build up play outside of the 18 yd box and a sharp through ball which Liam Diggle latched onto and fired into the bottom left , we kept pushing and never gave up and with the final whistle looking imminent Garstang made a final sub and Town pounced floating a fantastic ball right into the box .It saw it’s way to Luke Diggle who’s overhead kick found it’s way to Sam Hughes who’s flick tucked the ball into the bottom left corner.
A game where certain decisions didn’t go our way and probably a game we should have won but the effort and determination from the lads was excellent and performances like this can do nothing but give us a big boost going into the derby.
