2. History 2

An inaugural match was arranged against Vale of Lune, but on the day the visitors could not travel as the road at St.Michaels was flooded. Fylde hastily raised a team and stood in as the opposition. It was the following year that the club was re-located on a ground in Fleetwood Rd, where it would remain for 75 years.

The 1960s saw the ownership of our ground finally settled and the club is forever grateful to our benefactor, the late Mr T B Silcock JP who gave us the major part of the ground including the then frontage onto Fleetwood Rd. Cllr J H Cunliffe JP and Mr J Clegg allowed use of the back part of the field. On the strength of this, the new clubhouse (1960) and changing rooms (1961) were built. Somewhat later the field was reduced from two pitches to one when the bungalows on Dovedale Av were built.

The official opening of the new clubhouse was on 10th October 1961 by the then President of the RFU, Major-General R G S Hobbs, CB DSO OBE, and the occasion was marked by a special match between a Thornton President's XV and a Guest XV.

The Club has always prided itself on its family involvement, with sons and now grandsons continuing where fathers left off (and in a few cases fathers and sons playing in the same team). The family involvement was completed by having a strong ladies committee. They were involved in fund raising and took an active role in Club life. Though there is no longer a need for a ladies committee, we are still grateful for their support.

The club has been involved in the Community, having loaned the ground to Thornton Cleveleys Gala Committee for activities during Gala week. We have had joint 'Fun Days' with the Rotary Club of Thornton Cleveleys and the Club House has been available for hire for Social functions and used by many organisations.
In 1937 Thornton Cleveleys Cricket Club played its first season at Fleetwood Rd using matting for a wicket, as their own ground at King Georges was not ready.

The clubhouse became affectionately known to many as 'THE HUT'. It was destroyed by fire in 2003 after TCRUFC had relocated to Thornton Sports Centre.
