U16's

Graham Ablett (Head Coach) takes up the story of an incredible away win:

A visit to Old Albanians at an impressive Sarries training ground saw the U16s got away in the HML. 16 vs 22 with their own (their words) bomb squad.

A confident start from the Ts saw immediate field position from good pressure at kick off. Shortly after, Ethan went in for the first try of the day.

OAs hit back almost straight away. It was clear that they were going to try and run over Ts. A conversion gave them the edge on the scoreboard.

Good territory and possession from the Ts saw them take the lead with a barnstorming 20m from second row Felix to get his second club try. Kaya's conversion made it 7-12.

That lead was cancelled out after OAs scored under the posts following an unusual try after Jack L stole the ball and was then tackled over the line. The boys looked confused, but then happy as the conversion hit the post.

To and fro then. Hard running from both teams. Big tackles. Defense on top. The Ts forwards were putting in a massive shift. OAs backs and forwards didn't want to play together. Every T working hard. In the midst of all that, Ryan (playing up) had to go off with an injured shoulder. Get back soon Ryan. You were mixing it with the best of them.

The arm wrestle then opened up and our backs got the ball with Jack going over. Kaya converted to give us a well deserved 12 - 19 advantage at half time.

The momentum went almost straight away in the second half. Some big carries from OAs was met by some aggressive hits. One Ts clear out was deemed head on head and, a bit out of the blue, after two minutes, we were down to 14 with no subs. Coaches from both sides were a little confused. But the official was clear and had the best view.

But this Ts team doesn't roll over. OAs tried to take advantage but some robust defense and fantastic work ethic, fended them off. And the territory was mostly ours.

OAs had been forced to kick out of defense to our back three several times. And we all know what damage they can do. After several almost clear breaks, the outstanding Ethan then burst all the way through to score his second with a strong, weaving run through the clothes lines. Conal converted to make it 12 - 24. But ages to go...

OAs pressure was telling. Defences were creaking. A near OAs try, another held over the line, and then a huge OAs 5m scrum on our put in, pushed us back over the try line and the ball bobbled out for a simple try. Physics and distances were discussed on the touchline.

That made it 17 - 26. No conversion and the game was in the balance and there was still more than fifteen minutes to play.

Jack L was winded. Will got hit in the back. Stevie, moving to hooker (thanks), took a knee to the face. The boys battled on.

OAs had lots of ball for almost all of the remainder of the game. But the defence stood strong. OAs often struggling to make ground. They started to run it from deep. Not for the first time for the T's, Conal spotted a pass on their 22 and nicked it to sprint in under the posts. He converted to make it 17 - 33. Six minutes to go. And a renewed OAs onslaught started.

A try on 33 minutes gave the OAs another try following a strong break by their 8 down the blindside, but they were being made to work really hard for their metres. The conversion made it 24-33. Two minutes left. No sweat. The game was well managed to close it out and get a very hard fought, team win. One of our best against a strong and passionate OAs team.
