After last year’s success, Saturday 19th October saw another edition of the Waverley CC Awards Night. Club Captain Toby Elborough was again Master of Ceremonies and was aided in his preparations by Scott Upward and Adrian Day. We’d also like to place on record our thanks to Fleet Cricket Club, for the use of their excellent facilities for the evening.
The evening started with a presentation to Pete & Suzie Brewer, whose record-keeping and treasury work is always vital in keeping the club running smoothly behind the scenes. Attention then turned to the playing awards, with the return of the “recognition awards” for various categories. These were (in no particular order):
Most ducks of the season: honourable mentions to Pravesh Kaushik (two ducks from two innings) and Toby Elborough (three ducks from six innings), but the winner was Adrian (four ducks from eleven innings) – he was presented with a bottle of Toilet Duck for his efforts.
Innings of the season: various honourable mentions, including James Wright (164 vs Medstead), Wayne Torrey (86 vs Vagabonds), Scott Upward (37 vs Badshot Lea) and Adrian Day (14* in 89 deliveries vs Sandhurst). However, the winner was Simon Brewer for his 72 vs Grayshott on a sweltering day, where the size of the boundaries meant most of those runs came in singles and twos.
Catch of the season: almost a monopoly for the Upwards, but in the end Toby’s grab at Hambledon was adjudged the best (dashing from mid-off to mid-on, whilst Sam Tempest simply stood at mid-on and watched with interest).
Bowling spell of the season: Adam Carmichael’s 4/25 vs Fairlands and Adrian’s 5/49 vs Frensham (only his second career five-fer) received honourable mentions. Charlie Harding’s 5/12 vs Grayshott would have won the day, but as he wasn’t present Toby elected to award himself the accolade for his 3/6 vs Fairlands.
Moving on to the main awards, the winners (as voted for in advance, by the players) were:
The M.A. Minshaw Batting Trophy – James Wright
The D.E. Powell Bowling Trophy – Adam Carmichael
The P.G. Brewer Player of the Season Trophy – Aiden Upward
With that, those present elected to make full use of the facilities on offer (particularly the pool table and dart board), whilst DJ Russell Golding kept the revellers entertained with various tunes and an exhibition of his dancing prowess.
Keep an eye out for details of the AGM (which will be available in due course) and we hope to see you all again next season!
