The phrase 'give it some air' was invented for Steve Morant's bowling during his playing career. To the naive, his deliveries looked like cannon-fodder, looping over ten foot in the air, and dropping rapidly from a great height. But this style, invariably on the spot, accounted for many an unwitting batsmen, as he bowled his way to 129 wickets, fifth in the all-time wicket takers for the Astons. And since his retirement from playing, he has continued his association with the club, most noticeably through his well-disciplined umpiring.
