4. David Newson

Presented by Alan Bateman, accepted by David's nephew Aaron Newson.

Dai “Nusiance” Newson played for the Warriors from the club’s 3rd match (at Stradey Park) and didn’t miss a game until his retirement at the end of the 10th Anniversary tour of New Zealand in 1995.
In this time he played 108 consecutive appearances. He was the club’s 1st Players’ Player in 1998 and then captained the club for the next 4 seasons (a record that still stands). He won Players’ Player in 1999 and in 2004 when he also won Player of the Year. Such was his dominance of try scoring, that the club tended to mark Top Points scorer at early presentation evenings. Dai was top try scorer 1997/98, 1998/99, 1999/00, 2000/01 and 2001/02 (it should be noted that the Warriors matches had passive scrums so there were no pushover tries, the usual staple for No8s).
He was the 1st player to make 100 appearances for the Warriors (at Burry Port). He rounded off his playing days with a Man Of The Match performance against South Auckland Kiwis, helping the Warriors complete an unbeaten tour of New Zealand. He scored his 50th try in that match, extending his club record.
Dai came out of retirement to play in the Dai Spriggs Memorial match. He also played for Burry Port RFC.
Once retired he remained involved with the club and was Chairman until his untimely passing in the summer of 2003

Dai was a physical and skillful No8 who did much to make the Warriors a credible rugby team in the club’s early years. To not miss a match in 10 years speaks volumes for his fitness and dedication to the Warriors cause. The standard he set made an impressive bench mark for all who followed.
