My Debut - Accounts of people's 1st game 6 of 6

6. Mark Bryant

Mark was one of "The Originals"playing in the Warriors 1st ever match against the Swansea Gladiators way back in 1995.

The game was played in a very rainy Gorseinon and the team was a mix of Heol Goffa staff, clients, friends and family. The game was officially a draw but recently some of the Warriors team have claimed that they won but were convinced to call it a draw.

Whatever the club had played it's 1st match and were established, here are Mark's recollections:

(writing in the run up to the 25th season, Mark starts with the disclaimer - it was a long time ago).

I was working in Llanelli Area Office at that time and we used to have a lot of contact with the establishments such as Heol Goffa SAC (we used to process the time sheets for staff at Heol Goffa SAC for payment. I had responsibility for Heol Goffa. I’m not sure how I was asked if I wanted to play in the 1st ever game, may be Andrew Murray asked me.

Obviously before the game I wasn’t sure how it would pan out with the contact etc and how it would go, but getting into the changing room with everyone there and seeing the excitement (and apprehension on peoples faces) it was just like another pre match rugby game, no different.

From what I remember about the game it was played somewhere ‘over the bridge’ and it was a rainy day. I played centre that day which I was pleased about because I hadn’t played much in the centre since leaving Youth rugby, in senior rugby I played on the wing. As regards the game it was a tight game in rainy conditions but I’m sure I was able to get in and score in the first half. I think that the game went back and fore, we were winning then they got back into it. I was surprised how physical the game was and it was a proper game of rugby. I’m not sure but I think that we were losing towards the end, but I managed to get the ball and find a gap and score by the posts and not long after the whistle went and we won the game.

I never forget the happiness from the Warriors that day and the celebrations in what was a tough game of rugby played in ‘proper’ rugby conditions. Thinking back to that day it’s amazing what the Llanelli Warriors have gone onto do and the places that they have seen.

Since that day I played a few more times for the Warriors and against the Warriors and my son Dan has also played and toured with the Warriors. I love to tell my son that I played in the first ever Warriors game and scored in the game. It was definitely one of my highlights of my rugby carrier if not the best highlight.
