Ronald Ernest Baird worked for The Norwich Union Life Insurance Society at Head Office, Norwich. He entered company service in 1937 aged 16 and worked in the Surrender Value section of the Actuarial Department. He enlisted on 7th June 1940 and was a Blenheim Navigator Bomb Aimer in North France and the Middle East. He was reported missing after a raid on Naples on 9th July 1941 and later reported killed in action, aged 20. His rank and unit are given as Sergeant Observer, RAFVR, 110 Squadron. His obituary reads:

"He was a most delightful and attractive boy and his charming personality won for him many friends. That such lads as Ronald - typical of England's finest young manhood - should have to sacrifice their lives is part of the heavy price that we are called upon to pay for victory. His unfailing cheerfulness and ready wit, coupled with his unassuming demeanour, leave behind a fragrant memory, and a sense of gratitude that he ever came across our pathway."
