Ex-Burnley Player & Coach lands Top Scottish Position
Former Burnley Coach Phil Leck has become the first Englishman to take charge of the Scotland International Club side.
Leck, now Head Coach at Hawick RUFC, is looking forward to the challenge of testing himself against Irish and French counterparts next month.
"To work in international rugby at any level is a great honour and this is something I am really looking forward to," said Leck.
"Scotland International Club rugby is similar to England Counties and is the link between semi professional and professional rugby."
"A lot of the players who feature in these squads can use it as a stepping stone to bigger and better things."
The squad is made up of players RBS Premiership and National Leagues.
Scotland host Ireland at Millbrae in Ayr on March 8th before travelling to take on France the week after.
"It has been quite difficult organising training sessions because I have had to do it around their clubs," added Leck who was also an Academy Coach at Sale Sharks, "But when I have had the chance, I have been around to watch as many games as possible."
Leck is in his second -full season at Hawick who currently sit on top of National League One having been relegated last season.
And he is enjoying his stint north of the border.
"Hawick is a small town but it is rugby mad," he said. "If you go to the super-market you can expect to stop and talk about rugby for 20 minutes because everyone wants to chat about what is happening."
Leck took over at Hawick after they had lost their opening 11 games of the season. Despite a fine run of results, Hawich ultimately were relegated following the end of season play-offs.
Despite his time at Sale Sharks and his current success at Hawick, Leck still considers Burnley as his club - and he is still in touch with the club on a regular basis.
"I love Burnley, it is a smashing club and is very well run," said Leck who still has a family home in the town. "I still consider my main club. I get back as often as I can to see old friends while my son Dom plays for the first team."
Leck, who spent 18 years as a player and as Coach at Holden Road revealed he often, chats with Burnley Coach Simon Finnan.
''I'm in contact with Simon at least once a month, either chatting on the phone or text passing on any advice I can give him."
"Simon will say 'I'm thinking of trying this out" and I'll try and help him the best way I can.
"He's doing a great job at the Club and is very enthusiastic. He's been there for a very long time and I am delighted it is working out for him as Head Coach."
Leck said it is unlikely he will return to Burnley in a coaching capacity in the near future but is more than happy to help out his former Club in any way he can.
"The truth is that I am now a professional Coach and this is what I do as a living," Said Leck. "So it is very unlikely I would return to Burnley as a Coach."
"But they know I am more than happy to help out and try and hold coaching clinics or courses when I am there.
"For me that is the best way I can help out and put something back in to the Club."
