Burnley travelled to nemesis side Southport for their third cup visit in six years and as before went down 10-3 in a bruising and ill-tempered affair.
The youthful local side will be encouraged with their fitness levels and physicality.
But they will also know some work still needs to be done at bedding in the new players and getting used to new combinations.
Meanwhile, the Under 19s went down in their first match after starting brightly with tries from Ash Nuttall and Lloyd Whittaker.
However, injuries proved crucial and visitors New Brighton built a lead.
Burnley did score the last try through skipper James Henderson to go down 43-15.
Tomorrow the seconds start their campaign at Eccles, while the thirds have a warm up match at Birkenhead Park, both 3 p.m. kickoffs.
On Sunday there will be training for all age groups from six to 16, with a chance for all players to have breakfast at 9-30 a.m., themed to show what a top sportsman or woman may have prior to training or matches.
It will also be a chance for any new players to come along and take part in training up until noon with qualified coaches

The senior colts travel to Northwich.
