2002/2003 Season

The new season started with a new skipper as Colin Todd oversaw an indifferent pre-season with a big win and a big defeat, not helped when the side were dumped out of the National Cup in a 50-point loss to Telford RFC. However, the League campaign got off to a better start with less travelling and with 2-away wins against Bromyard RFC and Redditch RFC and home victory against Stourport RFC gave confidence, so in the 18-games, ten wins and a draw was sufficient for a position just outside the promotion places.

With only 7-defeats in a 22-game season the 1st XV played well as Colin Smith continued to forge ahead at the top of the Point Scorers chart with another 132-point haul this season (2-tries, 25-conversions & 24-penalties). Both Willie Bache and the emerging Paul Hulland managed 10-tries apiece, with James Allen (9) just behind, Colin Todd (7) and Allan Shields (6 + kicks for 45-points). This was the season that Paul Hulland started his 3-year domination of the 1st XV Player of the Season Awards and was being encouraged, groomed and tutored for a high level at No 8 by Ian King.

The 2nd XV were not able to be so prolific, the lack of decent facilities and the rise to prominence of other local clubs and meant a drop off in the numbers of players interested in the sport and though Steve ‘Chico’ Phillips worked hard, only 9-matches were played and just 2-wins.

There was also better news on the ‘Sport 2000’ project with all permissions now granted and despite some delays a viable scheme was possible. In a world of rising costs, the developers had to reconfigure the site plans to reveal the budgets expected, which meant that many 3-story properties were proposed instead of the normal two stories. At this time legal contracts were being drawn up, there was real optimism in the town that the desired community facilities would eventually be delivered.
