1996/1997 Season

The Club required a new Coach this season because Roddy Yapp had decided to move on to coach the Worcester RFC Ladies XV. This was a team that included daughter Jo Yapp about to embark on a very successful career in rugby at both club level and for England Ladies involving 4-World Cup competitions. Nick Jones, having played for a season, agreed to take on the role. The team, having been promoted from third place at the end of the previous season, were likely to find it difficult and with Matthew Barnsley in his third consecutive season as captain the team struggled to adapt at this higher level.

Only a late flurry saw the club manage 4-wins, 1-draw and 6-defeats for mid-table respectability. In a full season the 1st XV struggled, winning only 9 of 27-games and the 2nd XV only managed 4-victories of 25-games under new Captain Andrew ‘Daisy’ Davies. Nick Jones doubted his ability and offered to resign as Coach, but the club were delighted to have fielded a side in so many games that would have added to the growing experience in the squad and so he agreed to return for a second season as Coach. The Under17/18’s under the captaincy of Rob Kirton also found victories difficult to come by, as the won only 3 of 14-games.

There was some competition in the point scoring at that stage with Colin Smith managing 97-points (5-tries, 9-conversions, 17-penalties & 1-Drop Goal) and Willie Bache sharing the kicking duties for 84-points. Only a little behind them was the emergence of another player that was destined to serve the club for another 12-seasons, Julian Harding had come through the ranks with a few games the previous season, but this time he managed 63-points. As far as try scoring was concerned it was Tony Heap with 7-tries at the peak of his powers as a ball carrying Tight Head Prop.
