Rugby Union: Wibsey hit a new low

Bottom-of-the-table Wibsey, beaten 122-0 at Huddersfield YMCA earlier in the season, hit a new Yorkshire Division Two low with a club record 125-0 hammering at Scarborough.

"We have been improving recently, but we have gone ten steps back with this defeat," admitted Wibsey's player-coach Gary Durn.

"Our tackling in the second half against Scarborough was disgraceful. John Hall and I have never seen anything like it.

"At least against YMCA we were committed, but against Scarborough no-one seemed bothered, apart from a couple of players.

"Paul Durn really lashed into us when we got back into the dressing room.

"We will have a players' meeting on Thursday, where some harsh words will be spoken and we will reassess things.

"We will also advertise in the T&A, but there is no question of us not seeing the season through. It is a matter of 'Watch this space.'

"The strange thing is that this was the same side, apart from one player who strengthened the team, that lost 15-0 at home to Scarborough earlier in the season.

"I think we only won two line-outs in the whole game and we were pushed off every scrum.

"But Scarborough were superb. They didn't kick away possession and kept everything in hand.

"Unfortunately we lost centre Damien Cope injured and only had a second row in the replacements bench.

"We had a prop playing in the back row and had to send Paul Knowles on to the wing and his opposite number had a field day. We had two back row men in the backs for the last 20 minutes."

Scarborough coach Mike Holder saw his own club record of six tries, set in 1970 against Beverley, eclipsed.

Right winger Mike Snell scored eight of the 21 tries as, mirroring their defeat at YMCA, Wibsey collapsed in the second half (it was 46-0 in both matches at half-time).

"I have a lot of sympathy for the players, but none at all for Wibsey's committee as the club seem to have gone rapidly backwards since John Orwin and Mark Faulkner left in the summer of 1996," said Holder.

"We had to press home our advantage as promotion could come down to points difference and everybody plays Wibsey twice.

"Relegation will probably prove a blessing for them as they will find their own level and they can then sort themselves out."
