Wibsey's power pack lead charge into semis

Mosborough 0, Wibsey 3.

Few at half-time would genuinely have given Wibsey much hope of winning this Independent Agriculture Yorkshire Silver Trophy quarter-final.

They only led by a Richard King penalty having played with a stiff breeze, and faced a determined Mosborough side who knew that much of the second half would be played in Wibsey territory.

But, thanks to a superb rearguard display, with the pack at the helm, Wibsey earned themselves a home semi-final against Edlington Granby - probably on Easter Saturday.

"It was a very good team performance," beamed Wibsey's No 8 Richard Hands.

"We knew we couldn't afford any mistakes and we settled down in the second half to play our natural game, which is driving and mauling.

"We knew we couldn't leave any gaps in defence, but we had been boosted by our display the previous week against Baildon.

"The last fortnight has vindicated our decision to carry on this season, and also showed that Yorkshire Division Four, which we will be playing in next season, will be no pushover - but it is probably where we belong at the moment.

"Defending a lead playing uphill is no new thing to us - after all we have been doing it for years at Beldon Lane.

"We knew what we had to do and we knew they would try and keep us penned in the bottom corner.

"As for this season we have had a torrid time in the league with our relegation from Yorkshire Division Three (their third successive demotion), but since November we have had a steady squad.

"Richard King, myself, Jason France and Simon Kidson were among the nucleus that wanted Wibsey to carry on, and it has never been a question of will Wibsey carry on, but just been a matter of at what level will they operate?

"These things go in cycles and we will consolidate and then start coming back.

"Some of the lads might not be in the first flush of youth, but they have held things together. And while we are not the fastest team on two legs, we do have experience and some power players.

"The draw has been kind to us this year, but we now have every chance of reaching the final."

Mosborough skipper and fly half Mick Addy admitted: "We are very disappointed and expected to win it from the position we were in at half-time.

"We expected to get 15 to 20 points in the second half, but they did well in the line-out (through Jason France) and the scrum.

"And what little ball we did get we either didn't choose the right option or chose the right option but didn't make much progress.

"We got sucked into their driving and mauling game, and should have looked for other options.

"Edlington Granby have a good set of forwards and might well try and take Wibsey on up front.

"But whoever won the Mosborough-Wibsey match should get through to the final."

Addy and King both missed an early penalty apiece, and both sides had the sniff of a try - Mosborough through right winger Mark Dean and centre Jason Mitchell, and Wibsey through lock Ian Percival, who was one-on-one against home full back Grayme Lidster.

Wibsey right winger Richard Burton also impressed after one storming run, beating three men having caught Addy's hoisted kick.

But the crucial penalty goal came on the half hour from King, although Addy hit the far upright with an effort two minutes later.

In the second half, Addy was wide with a drop goal and King had a penalty that didn't have the legs or the angle.

Addy hooked a long-range penalty after 72 minutes, and there was still danger right to the end for Wibsey, home scrum half Steve Sadler putting the visitors under pressure with a fine touch kick before referee Darren Breeden (Yorkshire Society) blew the final whistle.
