Power pack is Wibsey's bonus

Wibsey 14, Seaton Carew 43: Wibsey coach Ian Gregson was upbeat after this first-round Powergen rugby union Junior Vase defeat at Northfield Road.

After all, their opponents Seaton Carew from Durham and Northumberland Division Two have some pedigree in this competition.

"We lost 23-22 in the last 32 last season to a last-minute penalty against Worksop and they went all the way to the semi-finals," said their skipper Mark Appleyard. "This season we just want to better what we did in the Vase last season."

Gregson said: "They are quite a well-drilled side from a higher league division than us (Wibsey are in Yorkshire Division Six), but we stuck at it.

"We matched them in the forwards despite having one or two key players missing - Mark Ryan (foot) should be back this week, but Matt Haddock (dislocated thumb) is a long-term casualty.

"Neil Carter did well for us in the pack, as did Richard Hands, and John Hall had a superb game at tight-head prop.

"In the backs, Dan Horsfall did well at fly half. but our heads went down a bit in the second half and Seaton put it together. We just need to recycle the ball a bit quicker, but when it was slow, once or twice we took the ball in again and then did something with it."

Wibsey trailed 19-0 in the first half, but Gregson added: "We came back into it towards the end of the first half, and needed to keep that going in the second, but they scored first."

Home tries came from full back Rob Greenwood and flanker Carter, Horsfall converting both. Flanker Appleyard got three tries for the visitors, others coming from scrum half Ian Cambridge (2), right winger Mark Sawyer and second row Peter Storey, his brother Jeff landing four conversions from full back.

As for the league campaign, Gregson admitted: "It is a bit of a rebuilding exercise for us following our relegation last season."

l Baildon, hosting Yarm in the Powergen Junior Vase, scored three tries playing downhill, including two in ten minutes.

They came from Chris Smithies (2) and Richard Moorhouse, and Nick Lister, who showed blistering pace and tackled solidly, added two tries and two conversions in their 29-12 victory.

However, Baildon lost the line-outs 22-3. Nick Murphy was man of the match, but Hugh Gumbs needed stitches after an eye injury.

Baildon, playing on a pitch which has a one in ten incline, won their second XV match at Burley with tries from man of the match Steve McHugh (2), Nick Oddy, Richard Kingham and Phil Hannah, Mick Turner converting three from the touchline.
